A Daggerheart Compatible one-shot for 3–5 characters at Tier 1. One session, around four hours.

Stonemouth sits on the northwest edge of the world, where the white sand stops along a line you could walk on and the grey stone flats begin. Ninety-odd people. A dozen oxworms. One unfinished wall.

And one fourteen-year-old girl who can make water, which is the only reason anybody lives there at all.

The storm season is early. Whitestone is hiring hands to go north and brace the village before the weather lands, and the pay is good — three gold each, half up front — because it is three days out and nobody has taken the job in two days.

When you get there, the village chief tells you there is timber for three of the five things that need bracing, and that he is not the one who is going to choose.

You are.

Six days later the wind changes, ninety people walk into the one stone building in the village, and you find out that you were not the only ones who needed that hall still standing.

What's in it

  • A complete one-shot, 37 pages, three parts plus three ways in
  • An act of play built around a single decision — which three, and who gets left out. What you choose in Part One is the map you fight on in Part Two, and the bill you read in Part Three
  • Seven named villagers, none of whom need a stat block, all of whom are attached to something you can save or fail to
  • A sandstorm that actually does something — a full Environment, rope lines between the buildings, and a rule about letting go of the rope
  • Three original adversary stat blocks, built to the SRD's Tier 1 benchmarks
  • One handout, the reinforcement list, that sits on the table from Part One onward and does the remembering for your players
  • No prior adventure required, and none assumed

And a whole setting in the front of the book

Sandstorm is the first adventure in the White Desert, and everything you need to run your own stories there is in the opening pages:

  • Seven original playable ancestries written to the SRD format — humans out of ten thousand years underground, four peoples of the great cats, two of the lizardfolk
  • Two magic house rules and one ruling, including what happens in a world where water has to be made out of nothing every single day by somebody born able to do it
  • A full cost-of-living table — coin, cut gems, wages, weapons by rarity, and what a house costs in a city where the upper district is not expensive so much as unreachable
  • Oxworms. There are no horses here. There are enormous placid burrowing grubs that pull the carts, carry the load, and eat the white sand — and therefore can never leave it, which is why every border on the map is where it is

The world, briefly

There is no sun. There were two, once, and between them they spent a few thousand years boiling the seas off this world and burning the green out of it. Then both of them went. What is in the sky now is a hole with an outward-curling rim, and all the light in the world comes out of it, and the world's magic goes into it, and you can see this happening from anywhere at any time.

Nobody knows what it means. Nothing in this book will tell you.

Under that hole, people are doing fine. Water is bought and sold. Caravans run. Three kingdoms argue about a war that ended twenty years ago. This is classic fantasy, mixed — the end of the world is scenery here, not weather. Heroes are allowed to be heroes. Treasure is allowed to actually be treasure.
